Two years ago today, February 7, 2015, the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella, who had taken office just three days earlier, received Marco Pannella for a meeting at the Quirinale. Marco Pannella, who reached the presidential palace by taxi, was the first political leader to be received by the new President Mattarella.
As with his predecessor Giorgio Napolitano, Marco Pannella drew Mattarella’s attention to the issue of an urgent amnesty for the Republic, in order to put a stop Italy’s continuous violation of international human rights standards. The country has been repeatedly condemned by the European Court of Human Rights for the dramatic prison condition and the slow pace of civil and criminal justice.
In a short video the two men appear by the doorstep of the Presidential office with Marco Pannella waving goodbye to President Mattarella with a friendly “Ciao!”
