The Nonviolent Radical Party presents a Report on Prisons

On December 20, the Report on Prisons edited by Rita Bernardini, coordinator of the PRNTT addressed to the Council of Europe for consideration was presented in a conference held at the headquarters of the Nonviolent Radical Party Transnational Transparty (NRPTT). Gian Domenico Caiazza, lawyer and president of the Union of Criminal Chambers of Italy joined the conference.

Speakers included Sergio D’Elia and Elisabetta Zamparutti of NRPTT presidency, Alessio Flconio director of Radio Radicale, lawyers Riccardo Polidoro and Giuseppe Rossodivita, Francesca Scopelliti widow of Enzo Tortora and professor Tullio Padovani.

Speaking about the violations documented in respect of detention conditions, Rita Bernardini said: “Given the overwhelming amount of appeals tabled, the ECHR has realized that such violations do not concern sporadic cases affecting our prisons but that they were systematic and spread throughout the country. Yet Italian authorities managed to convince Europe that it was not the case and the dossier has been closed. However, in the meantime we have sent documented evidence showing that prison overcrowding is on the rise, and so did European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, which also urged the relevant authorities to remain vigilant.”

Tullio Padovani, professor of criminal law at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa and a member of NRPTT, said: “The dossier constitutes a fresh example showing the way in whcih the Radicals act politically, namely according to a concrete, rigorous, pressing and evidence-based approach. They rendered such an unjustifiable and shameful truth visible. We will see if and how the representatives of the Italian institutions will try to dodge reality.”
